Wolfhound Cup 2015 – Match Reports

On Saturday July 25th, 2015 we hosted our inaugural Winston-Salem Gaelic Football tournament. We invited teams from Raleigh and Charlotte to compete. After some last minute lining of the field we had turned a soccer field in to a Gaelic Football field. By 11.30am we were ready to host Charlotte in our very first game. Please read the match reports and see some pics from the day below…

Game 1 @ 11.30am: Winston-Salem Wolfhounds V Charlotte

The first game saw a battle ready Wolfhound team match up well against a strong Charlotte B team, a team bolstered by 2 A-Team players. We started well and even though we went down three points within the first 5 minutes we have brought one point back early on…so we were on our way…or so we thought. Charlotte started to gain some momentum and scored two quick goals on us, which put us on the back foot for most of the first half.

Charlotte started the 2nd half the same way they finished the first…. strong. We battled hard and even though we put some good plays together we could not find too many scores. Charlotte moved the ball extremely well and a lack of disciple in our defense allowed Charlotte to score 3 goals on us. They really had us against the ropes. We managed another early point in the second half as well as a much-needed goal mid way through the second half. However Charlotte’s light shone the brightest on the day and they finished much deserved winners on the day. The final scored finished Wolfhounds (1-02) v Charlotte (6-11).

Game 2 @ 1.00pm: Raleigh V Charlotte

The Raleigh V Charlotte game was a much more balanced game. Charlotte were after playing one game already and with a quick turnaround time were again in another tough battle. Raleigh got an early goal and led the game for most of the 1st half. It finished 1-04 v 0-04 at the half with Raleigh up by 3 points. Charlotte started the 2nd half in a similar fashion to the 1st game against Winston-Salem. They fought for the ball and held possession very well. They move the wall with ease and started to rack up some high scoring without a Raleigh answer…and then the dreaded Goal! Charlotte put a great piece of football together and captured that elusive goal they were waiting for all game. Now they were well and truly in the driver’s seat. Another few unanswered points from the end really put the game to bed and Raleigh could not find a way to close the gap, The game finished Raleigh (1-06) V Charlotte (1-12).

Photos @ 2.15- 2.30pm: Pictures with the Irish Wolfhounds

Members from the ‘Irish Wolfhound Association of the Mid South’ traveled far and wide to come to the inaugural Winston-Salem Gaelic football tournament to meet the State’s first and only Wolfhound GAA club. They are a great organization and brought some fantastic Irish Wolfhounds to showcase to the players and spectators a like. After some group pictures between the Winston-Salem Wolfhounds and Irish Wolfhounds we decided to start the final game a little early. We would meet the Irish Wolfhounds later at the Foothills Brewing After-party in air-conditioning.

Game 3 @ 2.45pm: Winston-Salem Wolfhounds V Raleigh

Redemption is what we were after in our final game of the day. We had lost to a strong Charlotte side in the first game and the sting was still very much present. We started well and won a lot of the footballs kicked out into the middle of the field. And even though we matched Raleigh score for score early on we struggled to keep the consistency of scores flowing. When did managed to go up by one point half way through the first half with tremendous work from our forwards. However Raleigh’s experience and skill on the ball proved to be too strong for us and we conceded two goals in the first half.

The second half saw us battle hard for every ball and we got some key scores early in the second half to help boost morale but only for it to be dashed by some great goal scoring opportunities Raleigh took and scored midway though the second half. However that Wolfhound heart never faltered or skipped a beat. We all played to the final whistle and made our club and our supporters very proud. Even though we lost the game we won the respect of our fellow rivals by providing them a strong fought battle and when you are an up and coming club that is as important as winning.

Thanks to WSSU for providing us the field, to the Irish Wolfhound Association of the Mid South, to Raleigh, to Charlotte, to Leilani & Tom for their wonderful pictures, to Maura for her master work behind the video camera and all our supporters who came out to fight the heat to provide some much needed support on the sideline.
