Connolly Cup 2015 – Match Reports

Last Saturday June 27th saw the Winston-Salem Wolfhounds participant in their 2nd tournament of the 2015 Gaelic Football Season. We have a tight turnout with numbers, having 15 people for our first game and 14 for our 2nd game…there are 13 minimum required for a team.

We played Atlanta’s 1st team in our first game and it was a tough match. We started slow and were down 6 points in a short space of time. But during a strong attack from Atlanta we put together string of passing with one of these leading to our first point half way through the first half. This gave us the boost we needed and we finally settled into the game.

Half time came and went very quickly (we were given only 5 mins between the halves). We spoke about the some of the issues we were having and some of the positives we were doing and got back out on the field to face the Atlanta attack again. We played a lot better in the second half and unfortunately Atlanta was just too strong for us on the day and even with our second half improvement it was too little too late. We will chalk this down to game experience!

In our second game we played Charlotte’s B team. This was another tough match due to face that we had very few subs and Charlotte had a lot of skillful footballers. Charlotte Scored early and we thought it was going to be a repeat of the first and in some ways it was. We did score a lot more in the first half of this game versus the first half of the Atlanta game and this was because of the grit and determination of the Winston-Salem players. Half time was used to stoke the fire in the bellies of the Wolfhounds one more time. We seem to have become a second half team – really playing well when we are under pressure. However similar to the Atlanta game it was too little too later and Charlotte B finished the victors.

So two games and two not Wins for us on the day BUT I think we gained some valuable insight into playing under pressure both as a team and as individuals. We will use this experience to build upon and further advance the team going forward.

Again a big shout out to out supporters Foothills Brewing, Finnigan’s Wake & Carlisle’s Pub AND of course our traveling supporters who help us from the side line. You support is appreciated and does not go unnoticed.
