As the 2018 Season begins
Our 2018 season began like the previous three seasons before it, on the 2nd Sunday in January. Some familiar faces donned wool hats and gloves as the temperatures were a chilly 37F. The ground was hard, the minds were ready and the legs were starting to feel the extra couple of pounds picked up over the holiday period.
A few new faces energized the group and like we had never taken a break form the game, we were back in full stride, jogging, warm-ups, football skills and conditioning…it feels good to be back!
The air smelled fresh and crisp and the chatter of friends – old and new – reminded me of the comradery all members of this club has helped build over the years.
We finished the 2017 year as winners of the James & Catherine O’Sullivan cup (Raleigh GAA) and being recognized by the USGAA as the best new men’s club in the country. The game is not about awards, trophies and accolades but getting recognized by our peers and raising the bar of the team to compete against our competitors is an amazing achievement.
Over the coming weeks we will increase the number at training, we will start to see the weather improve, we will register another team, we will see new faces join us and miss some old faces, we hurt together, laugh together and improve together and raise the bar even higher.
St. Patrick’s Day (3/17/18) sees us reach the first of many peaks of our season. We will be hosting our third annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration at our main sponsors, Foothills Tasting Room. This year will be bigger and better than last year and is something not to be missed. You might even walk away with $3,500 towards a trip to Ireland.
To leave you with a final thought from the Dublin born playwright George Bernard Shaw
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing”
So, to continue playing, we hope to see you at our St. Patrick’s Day celebration
Go raibh maith agaibh
